Steps to Run for Office
Running for office can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. This roadmap walks you through every key step to getting on the ballot and starting your campaign in Rhode Island.

Decide What Office to Run For
Think local or statewide—what role fits your experience and your community’s needs? Make sure you meet basic requirements like age, residency, and district boundaries. Learn which office is right for you here.

Understand Campaign Finance Rules
Learn the rules for fundraising and spending. Track all contributions and expenses, and follow your reporting deadlines.

Get Your Campaign Set Up
Apply for an EIN, File your CF-1 with the RI Board of Elections*, and open a campaign (business not personal) bank account before raising or spending any funds.
*Note once you do this your campaign will be publicly visible on the RI Board of Elections website, and technical ‘live.’

Launch Your Campaign
Announce your run publicly! Build your team, set up your website, and start sharing your message.

File a Declaration of Candidacy
Officially declare your campaign with your Local Board of Canvassers. Typically due in late June (3-day filing window).

Collect Nomination Signatures
Gather valid voter signatures on your nomination papers in your district to qualify for the ballot. Usually collected in early July—submit forms by mid-July.

Voter Outreach

Get Out the Vote
Help supporters make and follow through on a plan to vote—by mail ballot, early voting, or on Election Day.
